All too often people accept without question misleading sound bites from politicians and oil industry spokesmen who don’t let accuracy get in the way of their message.
Entering graduate school was my most cherished dream since school graduation. I have never been a good writer, but I don't know how did I manage to enter and graduate from college. No more than a fluke, I think. Currently, I'm a master's student and waiting for the final year. Do you think I'm waiting for it because of the ambitions to be realized? Well, you're deeply mistaken. Everything is much easier: I'm just afraid of it and nothing more. To be true, graduation isn't the key event scaring me. I'm worried about my writing. My school requires students to submit theses to be awarded a diploma. It's a kind of challenge for many of us, who feel it difficult to tackle even a 500-word essay. As you probably understand, I belong to this 'majority'. So, recently I decided to buy thesis online : it's the only available way for me to finish these studies and get what I deserve. The number of companies providing academic assistance, and thesis writing, in particular, is really huge. Finding the right one took a few weeks for me. I think it's a too huge amount of time for the 21st century, but let's avoid details. BestCustomWriting was my final choice, and it turned out to be the best one. I didn't get the final paper yet, but the first several parts look really cool. The writer managed to comply with the topic, use proper structure, formatting, and credible sources of information. I'm surprised to see that my thesis will even contain some findings, although no research has been done by me/my writer. I would never be able to create and submit the dissertation I'll submit using expert help. And the most surprising thing is pricing. I thought ordering a thesis would cost me a fortune, but it turned out that I was wrong.
FICTION: Drilling for oil in the Atlantic is necessary to help achieve energy independence.
FACT: The U.S. would not export oil if it was needed to achieve energy independence. Yet we currently export about 300,000 barrels of crude oil a day to Canada, an exemption under the 40-year ban on exporting crude. (Bordoff, 2015) Then on October 6, 2015, the House of Representatives voted to lift the export ban.
(Bordoff, 2015). Jason Bordoff and Trevor Houser. January 2015. Navigating the U.S. Oil Export Debate. Center on Global Energy Policy.
FICTION: Seismic surveys must be conducted in the Atlantic to find out how much oil and gas is out there.
FACT: Seismic surveys alone do not determine how much oil and gas are present. Exploratory drilling is necessary to determine whether hydrocarbon deposits are present and to determine if there are sufficient quantities to be commercially produced. Seismic surveys identify the location and characteristics of geologic formations likely to contain oil or gas. That information allows the government to estimate oil and gas resources and allows the oil industry to focus their drilling in the most promising areas. But BOEM cautions that, “When considering estimates of hydrocarbon resources for decision making, one must keep in mind that resource estimates are just that—estimates.” (BOEM. 2014. Draft Proposed Program. p.5-6)
FICTION: There is no evidence that seismic surveys harm marine mammals.
FACT: Many scientific studies have shown that seismic surveys disrupt the behavior of marine mammals. The airgun noise interferes with communication among these social animals, displaces them from feeding and breeding areas, and alters their migratory travel. The harm that results includes stranding, reduced population levels, weakened individuals that are more susceptible to predators, and premature death. (Weilgart, 2013) The oil industry claims there is no causal relationship between seismic airgun noise and the consequences of behavioral changes in marine mammals just as the tobacco industry claimed for decades that there is no casual relationship between smoking and lung cancer.

South Carolina's spectacular coastline from offshore drilling.

At a Glance : Why it Doesn't Make Sense
Oil and gas industry leaders are saying that Atlantic Offshore Drilling will boost economy, will help gain American oil independence and is environmentally safe.
Why bipartisan states Florida, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine already said NO. |
Intro to the Issue![]()
“The federal government proposed earlier this year to open the Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia coasts to offshore oil and gas leasing in 2021. This action, which would make the South Atlantic coasts available to oil and gas leasing for the first time in over 30 years, introduces a significant shift in federal policy and a threat to the environment, economy, and lifestyle of the Southeast coast...” – SELC

Where did the oil go?
Five years after the BP oil spill, Perrin Ireland at NRDC, shows us how scientists tracked the lost oil of the Deepwater Horizon spill and its impact.

Republican Sen. Chip Campsen:

“...In the process of building and delivering my vessels from the Gulf of Mexico I have observed firsthand the land-based infrastructure necessary to support offshore drilling. It is not a pretty sight. It is extensive, dirty and highly industrial.
There simply is no place on South Carolina's coast appropriate for this kind of industrialization. Our coast is dominated by residential and resort development, wildlife refuges and extensive protected ecosystems such as the ACE Basin and Santee Delta. Offshore oil's land-based infrastructure would not mix well with current coastal land uses.”
